Mark 9 lines at 3 in (7.6 cm) intervals up one of the posts. Make sure that the 2 posts are standing on a level, flat surface. Then, use a tape measure to measure up the post 18 in from the ground.
Give your horse enough freedom of movement with the illuminated seat and limit with the same amount of pressure on your calves and reins. Distribute your weight evenly over your stirrups and absorb each canter jump by bouncing slightly at your ankles. These pieces of timber are usually around $4 to $5, which is much better than forking out hundreds of dollars on rails from equestrian retailers. Once you’ve purchased them, they’re not quite ready for use. Instead, it is better to sand them down, and then caulk any gaps in the wood to make them nice and smooth.
Measure & drill holes in the 4×4 standards
It sounds pretty basic, but it teaches your horse jumping doesn't have to be uncomfortable. If he keeps slowing down before a jump, get a vet to have a look at his legs for any sprains or tight muscles. Each piece is a "jump foot" that will be attached to the 4 in × 4 in (10 cm × 10 cm) beam.

Building Your Own Jumps
Pull the drill trigger and look for a wobble in your drill bit. While you could use any other paint color you prefer, white is more recommended. Because it is brighter, it also makes the jump much easier for the horse to see.
Make sure that the holes you drill through the posts are all on the same 2 sides. None of the drilled holes should be perpendicular to each other. Standard hunter and jumper show jumps are 12 feet wide.
How To Build Your Own Horse Jumps
Horse jumps are a great way of improving your horse’s skills and your own. You can purchase jumping cups at Dover Saddlery or any horseback riding supply store. This will still protect the wood from the elements but won't flake off with time.
Then insert the nubs into one of the drilled holes and release the cup so the nubs slide in properly into the hole. Measure the width of the vertical posts from edge to edge and divide by two. Then, put a mark at the halfway point of the bottommost line on the poles. Once you have marked the lowest lines of both posts, proceed with the rest of the lines.
Then you will attach each piece of wood in a pinwheel fashion. Only attach one screw, and for these screws I use 3” decking screws. You can use bolts if you want to, but I have had very good success with these screws. So using our pair of standards, we will need 8 20” pieces of wood, basically 8 pieces per pair of standards.
The next step is to start making your rails, which is what your horse will actually jump over. Spray paint is perfect for the standards, but you may want to use a brush to paint your rails and gates. The most important thing with painting the jumps is leaving time for them to dry! This will ensure that the paint is cured, but just be prepared for your perfect paint job to be ruined after a few sessions jumping with your horse.
Use your pencil to make a mark on one of the flat sides of the post. Using the level, draw a horizontal line through the mark. Draw another line at the same height on the opposite side of the post. Then, continue measuring up the post in 3 in (7.6 cm) intervals until you've marked 9 lines. It is not designed to be durable in the elements with horses smacking their hooves into it. JUMP PVC claims to be the first company to successfully harness the technology of PVC for horse jumps.
They are, after all, known for their great jumping ability. What is slightly more surprising, though, is watching donkeys jump over fences to escape their enclosures. The record for the equestrian high jump stands at 8ft 1in (2.47m) and was achieved by Captain Alberto Larraguibel Morales riding Huaso ex-Faithful in Chile in 1949. The lowest point of the jump is where the poles cross. With just a little time, effort, creativity, and some basic tools you probably already have, you can build some pretty great jumps . But professionally built jumps are too expensive or not available.
And once I have cut the wood, I also like to cut the corner off the top on one side. And even though I have never hit the edge of a standard doesn’t mean I don’t think about it all the time. And I like the way it looks too, cleaner lines in my opinion. Like something you would see at the horse show, and definitely not homemade.
If the wood you are using for your horse jump is too rough, consider sanding it before you start and again after you have built the jump. This will make painting much easier and the jump will look more professional. PVC pipe and should only be placed on the posts when you are taking the horse out for a jump. But to make sure it fits and sits properly on the cups, set it up now.
